"A Hitchcock in the making sets his scene at Saunders Farm: Montreal filmmaker Tommy Groszman used Munster's Halloween theme park for his high-tech remake of the classic Rear Window", Tony Lofaro reports.
Scary things have been happening at Saunders Farm and it has nothing to do with Halloween.
The farm, located in Munster in southwest Ottawa, provided the backdrop recently for a PG style horror/thriller mystery film that had teenage actors dressed up in scary costumes and getting lost in the 35-acre haunted forest and maze. It was also the scene of an apparent murder in the feature film tentatively titled Saunders Farm.
"I like to call the film a high-tech version of Rear Window," said Montreal director/producer Tommy Groszman, referring to the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock thriller in which James Stewart believes he sees a murder being committed from his apartment window.
He said the film follows a teenage boy who suffers from agoraphobia, the fear of open or public spaces, and is confined to his home where he makes virtual videos of what happens at the farm by uploading Blair Witch style footage his friends provide. He taps into the farm's security system and sees that his friends, including Chelsea, his love interest, are abducted and could be actually murdered at the farm.
"The whole theme is to get out of the digital world, face your fears and do something real," said Mr. Groszman of the Montreal-based F.A.T. Productions.
A film crew spent a week at Saunders Farm in October around Halloween shooting scenes for the horror movie and are returning this spring for additional filming. Filming took place at the farm to take advantage of the elaborate and scary Halloween show that is staged there each fall, he said.
"I was really blown away from the farm and I said 'We have to make a movie there'
"We're quite excited about this film because the farm figures quite prominently in it," said Mr. Saunders, adding he hopes the producers keep the original title.
The feature film is expected to be released in the fall to theatres and on video, although Mr. Groszman said Ottawa high-tech tycoon Michael Cowpland visited the set last year and expressed interest in releasing the film on his newest venture, ZIM-TV.
